Your Switch Explained

Your TT Heat Hat comes with a precision digital controller. The display shows your temperature setting and timer. Use the buttons to adjust both until you find what works best for your hair. Below you can see both switch models in action.

Why your switch cycles — and how to read your controller

Your TT Heat Hat’s switch is designed to fluctuate around your set temperature — this is an intentional safety feature, not a fault. The switch starts at its lowest setting and each level rises gradually, with the temperature fluctuating by roughly 3 degrees around the point you select. As you choose higher settings, the heat increases steadily.

Most people find their sweet spot at around level 5 or 6 on the original switch, or around 50°C on the new switch. Because everyone’s body temperature is different, you need to explore what your specific hair type responds to best — there is no single right answer and it may take a session or two to dial in.

It is very common to feel like the heat is reducing during your session. This is a biological misconception. Your body and scalp are simply normalising to the temperature you have chosen — a natural response to sustained, consistent heat. The TT Heat Hat’s temperature has not actually dropped. Trust the process and stay at your setting.

The science — at what temperature does heat open the cuticle?

Gentle heat between 120°F (49°C) and 150°F (65°C) is the range used in professional salon settings to open the hair cuticle for deep conditioning — typically applied for 15–30 minutes. Within this range, heat gently lifts the cuticle scales, allowing conditioning actives to penetrate deeper into the hair shaft than they ever could at room temperature.

If you have low porosity hair — hair with tightly sealed cuticles that resist moisture — start at around 120°F / 49°C and gradually work up toward 150°F / 65°C as needed to effectively lift the cuticle and allow your treatment to do its job.

This is why the TT Heat Hat is not just a luxury — it is a scientifically grounded tool for getting more from every conditioning treatment you use.

Your TT Heat Hat
Wash Day Routine

This wash day routine is dermatologist and trichologist approved as the most effective approach for afro and curly hair looking to retain more moisture. Every step follows the guidance in How to Love Your Afro by Paige Lewin and the TT Heat Hat Method Guide.

A well-executed wash day is the foundation of every healthy hair care regime. The TT Heat Hat elevates every step — opening the cuticle, improving product penetration, and making your conditioning treatment work significantly harder.

1
Detangle Before You Wash
Your hair must always be lubricated before detangling — apply a conditioner or a light oil to provide slip and protect strands from friction. Begin with a gentle finger detangle on dry or slightly damp, lubricated hair. Work slowly from the ends upwards. Follow up with a quality detangling brush — avoid brushes with ball-tipped bristles, which snag on tightly coiled hair.
Trying to detangle after wetting knotted hair dramatically increases breakage. Wet hair is at its most fragile — starting detangled and lubricated protects every strand from the very beginning of your wash day.
2
Shampoo & Scalp Cleanse — Wash Twice
First wash — scalp focus: Saturate with warm water. Emulsify a cleansing shampoo between wet palms, apply to your scalp and use fingertip pads — never nails — to firmly agitate and lift away dirt and build-up.

Second wash — hair focus: Follow with a conditioning shampoo, working roots through to ends. This re-deposits moisture into the hair shaft, leaving it clean, hydrated and ready for conditioning.
A clean scalp is non-negotiable. Build-up acts as a barrier — if your scalp is not clean, your conditioner cannot penetrate effectively, and your TT Heat Hat’s work is wasted. The double wash ensures both scalp health and hair hydration in one wash day.
3
Apply Your Conditioning Treatment
Emulsify your conditioner, deep conditioner or hair mask between wet palms to warm and activate the ingredients. Apply generously from mid-lengths to ends, working through each section. Keep adding water to build slip and ensure every strand is fully coated.
Warming your product before it touches your hair dramatically improves distribution and effectiveness — especially with thicker formulas. This step is often skipped and makes a real difference.
4
Put On Your TT Heat Hat
Once your hair is fully detangled and completely drenched in conditioner, place your TT Firm Floral Shower Cap over your hair. Secure your TT Heat Hat over the top, switch it on and select your starting temperature. See Section 3 for guidance on where to begin.
The TT Heat Hat gently opens the hair cuticle, allowing your conditioning treatment to penetrate much deeper into the hair shaft than air-temperature conditioning alone ever achieves.
5
Wear for 20–30 Minutes
Sit with your TT Heat Hat on for 20–30 minutes. This is your self-care window. Paige uses this time for a face mask, some lavender oil in a diffuser, and a curated playlist. The combination makes wash day something to genuinely look forward to.
Time under heat is what separates a standard condition from a true deep treatment. Warmth and time allow ingredients to penetrate the cuticle and the hair’s cortex — delivering lasting softness, elasticity and moisture retention from one week to the next.
6
Rinse with Cool Water
After your treatment time, remove the TT Heat Hat and your TT Firm Floral Shower Cap and rinse thoroughly with cool or lukewarm water. A cooler rinse closes the hair cuticle back down, sealing in the moisture and conditioning benefits you have just deposited.
Heat opens the cuticle — cool water closes it back down. Rinsing hot after conditioning undoes much of the benefit by keeping the cuticle open and allowing moisture to escape.
7
Dry & Style
Air dry, diffuse or dry under a hooded dryer. Apply your leave-in conditioner, curl cream or gel styler to damp hair and style as desired. Wet hair is at its most fragile — always be gentle until fully dry.
How you dry your hair matters as much as how you wash it. Aggressive handling of wet hair is one of the most common causes of breakage, especially for tightly coiled textures.
Paige’s self-care pairing tip

“I love using a vitamin C or turmeric clay face mask while sitting under my TT Heat Hat with my deep conditioning treatment for twenty minutes. It’s the part of my wash day I look forward to the most.” — How to Love Your Afro, p. 72

Finding Your
Perfect Temperature

There is no single perfect temperature for every person. Both switch models have been built to be safe for most customers unless you have been advised otherwise by a professional.

The science — how heat opens the cuticle

Gentle heat between 120°F / 49°C and 150°F / 65°C is the range used in professional salon settings to open the hair cuticle for deep conditioning, typically for 15–30 minutes.

If you have low porosity hair (tightly sealed cuticles), start around 120°F / 49°C and gradually work up toward 150°F / 65°C as needed.

Each level fluctuates by approximately 3°C / 5°F. Most people find their sweet spot at level 5 or 6 on the original switch, or around 50°C on the new switch.

Why it feels like it’s cooling down: Your scalp is normalising to the sustained temperature — the heat has not changed. Trust the process.

FactorHow it affects your heat experience
Hair density & lengthLonger, denser hair — especially locs bundled inside the cap — builds and retains significantly more heat than shorter, finer textures.
Body temperatureEveryone’s natural body temperature varies. Those who run warmer will naturally experience a higher overall heat at the same setting.
Shower cap typeThe TT Firm Floral Shower Cap retains heat evenly. If using a thinner plastic cap, add the TT Self Care Headband around the base to trap heat, or upgrade to the TT Firm Floral Shower Cap.
Headband useYour TT Self Care Headband around the base of your shower cap traps heat inside. Without one, heat escapes from the edges.
Curl pattern & textureTightly coiled, high-density hair holds heat differently to looser curl patterns. Your ideal starting point is personal to you.
How to find your sweet spot

Start on a lower setting and work up one level at a time. A good session feels gently warm and deeply conditioning — not uncomfortably hot. If at any point you feel too hot, remove the TT Heat Hat immediately.

Safety note

Both switch models have been designed to be safe for most customers. If you have been advised by a medical professional, dermatologist or trichologist to avoid heat on your scalp or hair, please follow their guidance. If you experience any discomfort during use, remove the TT Heat Hat immediately.

Section 4

Choosing the Right
Treatment for Your Hair

The product you use with your TT Heat Hat is just as personal as your temperature setting. Whilst I develop my own conditioning treatment formulated specifically for use with the TT Heat Hat, here is how to choose what works for you right now.

Look for treatments, deep conditioners and hair masks that say any of the following on their instructions or packaging:

Recommends use with heat or a heat cap
States it offers deeper penetration or enhanced absorption with heat
Notes that its ingredients are activated by heat
Suggests sitting under a hooded dryer or steamer
Is labelled as a deep conditioner or intensive hair mask (typically 15–30 min use)
Regular conditioners work too

Regular rinse-out conditioners can absolutely still be used with the TT Heat Hat. Paige uses hers on every single wash day because the heat enhances their effectiveness significantly. Your TT Heat Hat will improve any conditioning step.

Always follow product instructions

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If a product advises against heat, respect that. When in doubt, consult a qualified trichologist or hair care professional.
